PCCA Sponsors Compounding Session at FIP

The FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) is a global federation representing three million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists worldwide.

FIP1The FIP (International Pharmaceutical Federation) is a global federation representing three million pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists worldwide. Every year, the FIP organises the World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, in which thousands of pharmacists meet, learn, share and exchange views. Lectures, plenary sessions, poster presentations and section programmes, together with Council meetings and the Leadership Conference, make this event the premier international event in pharmacy worldwide (FIP, 2014).

The 73rd World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences was held in Dublin, Ireland from August 31st to September 5th. The theme of the 2013 congress was Towards a Future Vision for Complex Patients: Integrated Care in a Dynamic Continuum, which addressed the constantly evolving environment of healthcare and the central role of the pharmacist at the forefront of this change (Lutz, 2014).

Pharmaceutical compounding was one of the main topics discussed in this congress. The FIP Community Pharmacy Section and the FIP Special Interests Groups on Formulation Design and Pharmaceutical Technology, and on Translational Research, organized a six-hour session called “The Role of Compounding in Closing Therapeutic Gaps.” PCCA was the exclusive sponsor of this session, which featured guest speakers from the United States, Portugal, Germany and Spain to discuss various compounding specialties, considerations, guidelines and standards (Lutz, 2014) (Figure 1).

FIP2Maria Carvalho, Academic and Scientific Liaison to PCCA, was invited to deliver a presentation on the topic, “When Not to Compound and Considerations Before Compounding.” If you wish to obtain a copy of this oral presentation, please contact PCCA. PCCA also had a poster presentation titled, “Compounding for Complex Patients: Pediatrics,” by Carvalho, Daniel Banov, MS, RPh, and Fabiana Vieira-Banov, MS, RPh..

A summary of all oral presentations was published in the International Journal of Pharmaceutical Compounding, Vol.18, No.1, January / February 2014. For more information, please access the following link: http://www.ijpc.com/Abstracts/Abstract.cfm?ABS=3757.
