PCCA Names Mike Collins, RPh, FIACP, FACA, of Michigan, Pharmacist of the Year

HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--PCCA has named Mike Collins, RPh, FIACP, owner and president of Healthway Compounding Pharmacy of St. Charles and Saginaw, Michigan, as its Dr. M. George Webber 2015 Compounding Pharmacist of the Year. The award, which is given annually to an independent pharmacist who has demonstrated service excellence to patients, healthcare providers and pharmacy colleagues, was presented to Collins on November 6, 2015, by Jim Smith, president, and David Sparks, CEO, during the company's International Seminar held in Houston, Texas.

"Mike’s accomplishments in compounding have earned him the respect of his colleagues across the United States and the status of being in the top ten percent of his profession," said Jim Smith, president of PCCA." Collins has received a number of state and national honors for his contributions to his community and his profession, including PCCA’s national Pharmacist of the Month, the Michigan Pharmacists Association Innovative Pharmacist of the Year, the Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Pharmaceutical Services, and the American Pharmaceutical Association Academy of Pharmacy Practice and Management Distinguished Achievement Award in Specialized Pharmaceutical Services.

Lizzie Dragon, vice president of Marketing, Education and Member Relations for PCCA, added, “Mike is one of those special people who inspires everyone around him to be the best they can be in all areas of life, not just professionally. Whenever you spend time with him, you leave feeling as if you’ve become a better person. It’s an honor to call him both a friend and a colleague.”

Collins has been practicing the art of compounding for more than 30 years. He opened Healthway Pharmacy in 1985 when he purchased a pharmacy in St. Charles, Michigan. He saw the need to formulate medications for people and their pets and added a compounding laboratory to the facility. The practice grew dramatically and, in 1994, he built a new state-of-the-art compounding laboratory that also offered nutritional supplements, homeopathic remedies and herbal products. To accommodate a growing base of prescribers and patients, he opened a second compounding-only pharmacy in 2001 in Saginaw, Michigan. Healthway Pharmacy was Accredited by the Pharmacy Compounding Accreditation Board in 2007.

Collins is a Board-Certified Menopause Educator and a Board-Certified Anti-Aging Specialist through the American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine. Anti-aging medicine is a clinical/medical specialty and field of scientific research aimed at the early detection, prevention, treatment and reversal of age-related decline. He is a 1980 graduate of Ferris State College of Pharmacy in Big Rapids, Michigan, and a Fellow of both the American College of Apothecaries and the International Academy of Compounding Pharmacists. He also is an active member of the American Pharmaceutical Association, the National Community Pharmacists Association and the Michigan Pharmacists.

In accepting the award, Collins said, “So many people in this room have been mentors to me and many others. All of them share in this award.”

The late Dr. M. George Webber, for whom the award is named, was a long-time professor with the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, and was instrumental in the formation of PCCA in 1981.
