What led you to PCCA?

I hired a young pharmacist years ago, and she insisted I start compounding, though I can’t remember the exact date. She had worked at a PCCA pharmacy and led me to PCCA. I have been a happy customer ever since.

What was your toughest patient problem? How did you solve it?

We had a show horse that had an abscess in its hoof. The equine vet wanted to put the horse down, but the owner is also a vet and wouldn’t give up. We needed to make customized antibiotic treats for her horse. Flavoring was the first issue. Then, scaling up the recipe to make a month supply of the medicine was the next challenge. The horse is doing well today.

What has been your most satisfying patient experience?

There are so many — that is one of the benefits of our profession. I would have to say my most satisfying was helping a 3-year-old autistic child with compounded medication that his doctor had prescribed. In weeks, the young child’s life had changed: He began to let his parents hold him; he started counting and speaking in sentences.

What is your favorite PCCA base, and why?

Lipoderm®. It is such a great base for my patients, especially for pain creams. PCCA has so many great bases; it’s hard to pick just one.

What is your favorite PCCA educational event?

The 2018 Vet Symposium. I had also completed the C4 Veterinary training, and it all gave me the confidence I needed to speak to vets. It has allowed us to grow our exotic animal business.

When was the last time a patient thanked you?

Two weeks ago. We had helped a patient with her fibromyalgia through personalized medicine. She thanked us because she had gotten her life back.

What do you wish you could tell new compounders?

Hire an educator/marketer.

What is your favorite thing about your job right now?

There are so many opportunities to help patients in compounding. I enjoy seeing the positive outcomes our patients receive with our compounds.

What is your personal motto or words you live by?

To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift. – Steve Prefontaine

What do you enjoy doing for fun?

Spending time with our family, going to our home in northern Wisconsin and running triathlons.

What is the best word to describe your life?

Fulfilled.
