How long have you been compounding?

I have worked at MedQuest Pharmacy for over 15 years and have had various positions. I started working for MedQuest Testing Service (MTS) and soon became a phlebotomist. Then, I moved into the compounding department in 2010, where I became the Lead Compounding Technician over 25 technicians until 2019. In 2020, I took over the Compounding Purchasing and Inventory Lead position, which brings us to today.

Did you always want to work in the field of pharmacy? If not, what led you to pursue it as a career?

When I was younger, I wanted to be a rock star — but then I grew up. A friend of mine worked in the pharmacy benefits management (PBM) field and sparked my interest in pharmacy. I began working as a pharmacy technician in 1992 and worked in the PBM world for 11 years.

When did you learn about compounding? Why did you start?

A relative who works in compounding turned my eye toward it in 2006. After working retail for a few years, pharmacy compounding was heaven.

What do you find most fulfilling about compounding?

The most fulfilling thing to me about compounding is that you are actually making something from scratch. To me, it is similar to baking, and who doesn’t love to bake? Compounding, to me, is an art form. There is no better feeling than knowing what you are compounding is being used to improve someone’s life.

What are some of your favorite PCCA formulas?

My favorites are PCCA Formula #12378, Testosterone 5 mg Sublingual Tablet Triturates, and #12985, Progesterone 200 mg Base A Troches. These are two of my favorite formulas to compound because both dosage forms are truly an art form. When compounded correctly, the end result is so satisfying.

Please share a compounding success story from your pharmacy.

With our superior goals of excellence in achieving healthy aging, there are so many success stories at MedQuest Pharmacy. We are literally changing people’s lives for the better every single day. We receive compliments all the time on our service and quality of products.

What advice would you give to a new compounder?

Never be afraid to ask questions more than once. Take full advantage of learning new things, and you will be successful.
